" Do good by stealth , and blush to find it fame "

- Alexander Pope

Stealth is an essential to become a Ninja. It is also a great skill to have on a rogue, thief and faction spy. It allows you to walk and even run (at higher level) while remaining hidden. It is also a compulsory skill to perform a number of the Ninjitsu special moves. The other skill complementary to Stealth are Hiding (a must), Ninjitsu, Snooping, Stealing, Tracking and Detect Hidden. This skill is mostly useful for Thieves, Assassins, and Ninjas.

In order to use this skill, you will need a minimum of 50 hiding, but higher hiding is highly recommended as you must be hidden before you can proceed to stealthing. Note that a series of actions will reveal you such as talking (other than in party), snooping, walking over someone or if someone walks over you. I strongly suggest that you use an ethereal mount on your stealther as you cannot stealth while mounted. A normal mount would reveal your location once you dismount it while you can remount your ethereal while still being hidden once you have stealthed to a safer location.

The number of steps you can take while hidden is determined by your skill level, and is of two steps by 10 skill point increments: ie 10 stealth equals 2 steps, 20 stealth equals 4 steps, etc. up to 24 steps at legendary stealther level. At GM and above, the number of steps you can take can be perceived as infinite as everytime you start walking while hidden, you will automatically attempt to stealth. You may also run while hidden but your risks of becoming revealed will be a lot higher.

Training

Stealth gains are affected by the armor you wear. So while the training method remains the same from start to finish, the only thing you will need to adjust according to your level will be your armor. Get your hiding skill high enough to the high 80s so that you rarely fail hiding. Jump on a boat and start to 8x8 on the following UO Assist macro:

Hide
Pause 12000
Stealth
Pause 12000

Then rince and repeat.

Skill What to Wear
0
Buy skill from NPC Thief or Gypsy
30
Normal leather armor
65
Studded leather armor
95
Studded leather armor + closed helm

Note that you do not need to move to gain. Even though you get the "You attempt to walk" message, you not need to move your character. Just make sure you are not on a mount.
