Slanted Roofs

Slanted roofs are here. They look gorgeous but are a nightmare to design. The following tutorial is a free adaptation of the original work of Lady Veil (UOLS Historian) and will attempt to make it easier on you.

There are 2 things you must take into consideration when designing the lower floors of your house:

  1. The slanted roof counts as a floor of its own. So the last floor of any sized home will not be inhabitable.
  2. If you want the roof to overhang on the side (and for a better look as well) you will need to leave 1 tile of clearance all around the external walls of your house so that there is room for the roof to overhang.

So your lower floors are designed. Time to get cracking on the roof. To make your life easier, use your radar (to compare the orientation of the pieces more easily) and have your Tool Tips turned on (on your paperdoll, look under options). The Tool Tips will activate the names of the various roof pieces in the housing tool.

Go to the floor above the last inhabitable level of your house to begin designing your roof. You want to start with the outside and build towards the middle. Note that the while in roof tool mode, there is a level button. It is important to start at level 1 or your roof will look out of wack.

Compare the label of the roof pieces in the tool to your radar to find the appropriate ones. Start with the corners first then fill in the edges.

Once the hedges have been placed, you should use the eye dropper to select the identical piece to fill in the inner row at the same level. It makes the process a lot easier and much faster. Before you start filling the 2nd row, make sure to click the level up button. It should therefore read level 2. You will need to do this for each row you add.

Because this house has differently sized sections, it is sometimes recommended to complete the smaller section before moving on to the larger one.

Then back down to level 3 to place the pieces in the large section and work the way up to the top row.

Your last row may require you to experment with different pieces to find out which one looks best. But eventually, you'll get the final result!
